Sustainability

Fish welfare with no moving parts

In aquaculture, sustainability comes down to how the fish are handled.

Fish welfare is not an addition to the method. It follows from no moving parts touching the fish.

Three things that change

Not promises of intent, but consequences of how the system is built.

  1. 01

    Less handling

Water flow carries the fish through the whole passage. No winch, no impeller, no mechanical part in contact with it.

  2. 02

    Non-medicinal

Laser instead of chemicals. The treatment happens in the water the fish is already in, with no pharmaceuticals to dose and discharge.

  3. 03

    Documented treatment

Every fish passes a camera under known conditions. That gives a log of the population, not an estimate.

The difference between steering fish with starvation and steering them with water.

Today's practice is to starve the fish to get them where you want them. Sector control moves them instead.

  1. 01 Preparation

    How it is done today

The fish are starved beforehand to become manageable.

    With sector control

The fish are moved between sectors without being starved first.

  2. 02 Crowding

    How it is done today

Net and winch press the fish together.

    With sector control

Water flow and sector division lead them where they need to go.

  3. 03 Afterwards

    How it is done today

How much was treated is an estimate.

    With sector control

    What passed through is logged.

Less starving and less crowding means less stress along the way.

The same camera sees more than lice

The camera that finds lice during the passage sees the fish under known conditions: known speed, known distance, known orientation. The same images can be used for biomass registration.

That way a delousing operation can also give a picture of how the stock stands, without the fish being handled one extra time to be measured.

What we do not claim yet

  • We do not put numbers on the effect on mortality until those numbers are verified through testing.
  • Capacity and lifting height are being documented now, under realistic conditions.
  • The technology is patent pending and still under development. We say which parts are in operation and which are being tested.

We are happy to talk about what is documented today, and what is still being tested.
